delay

edited September 2003 in Science & Tech
My father in law's PC is a Dell; approx 500MHz; approx 5 years old; running Windows 98. It's recently started hesitating when you type a key or move the mouse. It does this about 75% of the time. The hesitation lasts for about 2 seconds; it's fairly consistent. It's annoying cos in Word for example you press the delete key once to delete one letter; nothing happens so you press it again thinking you miss-pressed the key, and 2 letters get deleted. It also does it in internet explorer.

I don't think he's installed any new hardware (graphics cards etc).

Anyone got any ideas?

there could be something running in the background taking up cpu usage.

can you do a ctrl+alt+del and check if there are any exe's running that you dont know about (example: Virus)

in those 5 years, i bet you he's never re-installed windows once. more importantly, i'm sure he's never defragged either. run defrag, watch the dramatic speed increase. othrewise, consider backing up important docs and formating.
