hie guys, i just bought a new comp. but seem to have problems with the floppy drive. the drive is installed correctly, and i double-checked it (following the red line). the drive lights up when booting into windows xp but when i insert a diskette (any diskette), win explorer either asks me to format the diskette or "please insert disk..". ive checked in the bios and dont seem to find any problems there.. am i missing something here? hope yu can me out.. thanks.

i would double check the connector on the motherboard.

there are several things u could try.

have u tried a diff floppy disk?
    changed cables?

have u checked if the floppy is enabled in the bios.

perhaps it needs to be formated after all? otherwise, are you sure it's a good disk? i mean, take it to another computer, copy something to it, then try to use it on your new computer. if it doesn't work, swap out the drive into your other computer to see if it works there. if not, then the drive must be bad, but if it does then perhaps the floppy drive controller on the mobo is bad at which point, i'm guessing you bought a brand name computer here, so exchange it. to test that out, swap a known working floppy drive in your new computer.

the disks are good, i tried many.. i fixed the floppy drive to another pc and it works fine. im thinking the possibilities of the cable or the settings in the bios. wat yu think guys? could there be another problem? thanks.

change the cable then, that's cheap. in fact test it with the cable out of the other working comptuer. if it still doesn't work, reset your bios to default settings.

ok.. i fixed the floppy drive back to my comp. and it worked fine. i changed the cable to my frens fdd cable. i tested with a diskette and i can see everything. BUT unfortunately, a few hours later, the same problem happened again! could it be that the m/board is screwing every fdd cable i try?!? is it possible that the fdd cable itself can be spoilt without physical damage? thanks and hope for a reply to my problem ASAP..

When you mean physical damage, I take it you mean visabile as in on the out side. In that case, YES! Most often when a cable is damaged it is NOT VISIBILE and is a broken wire, corosion or a breakdown of an insulating layer between conductors. This is why it is standard practice to always swap components to test. It is a process of elimination. Try swapping the cable first then if that doesn't work put a different floppy drive in that machine and try it. What else can You do???

forget about the floppy drive altogether, it's old and worthless these days. get yourself a cd-r, they're only like 40-50 bux these days
