microphone problems

ok recently my microphone has stopped working. My sound card is the built in soundstorm in the nf7-s. Everytime i reinstall the drivers it works for a few minutes then stops again. I just need to know if this is my soundcard (and if so what can i do about it) or is it the microphone. I'm using win2k pro and everything else works fine.

    Is this the same PC that's having the response time/sluggishness issues?

    Okay, first -- would an application have a reaosn to mute the mic (like maybe a Instant messenging app that goes into suspend mode and mutes the mic channel when not in use).

    Is this a known issue on Nvidia's site that may have been solved by a newer driver or version/release of the soundstorm chip?

    I will assume the mic does not have a physical short or faulty switch of any type...

    I'm still thinking it's my first guess, something's muting the mic line-in.

    it now mysteriopusly works even though i didnt do anythign
