To reset thethis prefetch behavior do the following.

Start be deleting evrything in the prefetch directory within your windows install directory EXCEPT layout.ini

Reboot about 6 or 7 times min (this is an important step do NOT leave it out)

Now just use your computer for a week to ten days without defragging etc....

Then and only then do a scandisk followed by a defrag.

This will optimize the XP prefetch which trys to sorta cache programs you use often by.....

1.) Rebuild the Prefetch and clean out obsolete data, Believe me it's there!
2.) Speed up your machines drive access by doing number 3
3.) Move the programs you use most often to the front of your hard drive.

The XP prefetch is a often overlooked feature that actually can make XP faster after you have used it for a week or two. X-setup also lets you tweak the prefetch to prefetch only boot programs versus all programs. Try it. you will like it.

Cheers
