Usually if you install the whole driver suite there is an ink management program that shows ink status on your computer. Not sure about HP Photo printers though.

My HP 7550 Photosmart has the ink status primesuspect mentioned and yours should also.
mtgoat What is "ink status primesuspect " does that show ink levels?..........Just got my full refund so I'll be geting a printer this week or next

Yes, it shows the inl levels just prior to comiting a print job.
Durring this week, I'll be going to local retail stores to look and decide which one to go with. I'll be looking at the following
THESE for 1)individual ink carts,2)onscreen ink level,3)local repair shop locations {within 5 mins of my home} and they are the Cannon i850;s820;i960;s830d. I'll also will be looking at HP 7660;7260;7350;7760. The 7550 is a little over my budjet. I like the HP line due to reviews/recomendations here because of dependability of a 8 year old HP I have still going good and the HP line have built in card readers for diital cameras. A few even have a small monitor to see what your going to print with out the use of the computer. Good for quicky prints.

I have not been very happy with Canon software and their support/ customer service sucks.
