Remote Procedure Call

I've just installed Windows XP Pro on 2 seperate PC's, and in both cases I received the following error:

"Remote Procedure Call (RPC) unexpectedly terminated, and your computer will be closed down in xx seconds" or words to that effect.

Only happened when connected to the web, on the first PC installing all the critical updates seem to fix it, but the second I can't get that far. Immediately before you get this error the web stops working, and you can't get to any website.

Any ideas?:confused:

    thats the old RPC bug, there is a patch you MUST download in order to fix it, that was consequently included in one of the critical update packages. however, there are links to it somewhere, so you could DL it on a different PC, but i dont have it.

    Check this <A HREF="http://www.icrontic.com/index.php?module=faq&&id=1890">little FAQ</a> out.

    TheBaron is right, you have to download a patch from Microsoft to permently fix the problem. The error is caused by a worm that exploits a weakness in Windows. The patch plugs up the weakness. There is also a program Symantic wrote to get the worm off of your computer.

    no just the worm that exploits it. easy to do without it ;P

    The blaster worm was responsible for exploiting that weakness. A lot of people had problems fixing it because when the went online to download the fix, their computer would shut down. A fix for this is to go into windows services and change the properties of RPC from "on error reboot: to "on error restart service".

    you can also cancel the shutdown dialog with the command "shutdown -a"
