Cant get an IP

edited October 2003 in Science & Tech
Hey guys, I work for Old Dominion University. I've got this student that I can't seem to find out how to fix their problem. I've talked around with my coworkers and we honestly don't understand it. The student isn't drawing an ip is the problem. However its his computer thats not drawing it, our ports/switch are fine.

The computer is running windows 98 (not second edition)

Any suggestions on what could be causing the problem?

assuming you are positive your ports/switches aren't having any problems (i've owned several ports where the DHCP has failed as it begins to go bad), there are several things i would do.

    1) uninstall network card from device manager, pop out card, boot up just to show windows there is no card installed, boot back down and reinstall it, along with the latest drivers (which are always fun to find)

    2) if that doesn't work, do the same as above, but with a different network card, just to see if his card is t3h fUx0r3d.

    3) i'd be surprised if its not the card, but sometimes i've seen windows' new .NET architecture screw up during installation and wipe TCP/IP off the machine, see if you can't do a repair install of Win98

    4) convince him he's screwed, format and install win2K

    Good Luck O_o

oh i know its not our side, my fluke can draw an ip from the switch. I spent a couple hours playing with his tcp/ip settings trying to get it to work and it just didn't seem to want to work. I'm coming close to formatting but I really didn't want to do it. thanks for the input though.

make sure the card is set up for DHCP, then ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew in the command promt

oh come now armo... you know me personally... I'm not that stupid to not try that first... but i'll go see if the student has decided to fix it on his own aka make it harder for me to fix.

HAHA. i still use the format command instead of fdisk but thats never ruled out, students here can be so computer illiterate some times.
