MB or Case problem? Won't power on.

edited October 2003 in Hardware
The problem:
When I'm powered off and try to power on may take several tries. For instance, my power is turned off at the surge protector, I turn that on and hit the power button. Sometimes nothing happens. Sometimes it will light up for a second likes it's going to start and then power back off.

Seems to happen more when all power is off (surge protector), rather than just shutting the PC off.

Is this a case power switch problem or a MB problem. The problem has been around for a long time, it's just getting worse.

I've got the MSI K7t266 Pro2 MB. Case is a generic full tower (sorry no name).

thanx

Sounds like the surge strip is dying! Try eliminating the strip for one start-up to see what happens. If it boots fine then problem solved. You may even try another wall outlet.

    thanx for that kind word.

Ok, replaced power supply and. . . . she'll power up for a few seconds ---

    No beeps
    Fans power on
    CPU fan powers on
    CD's ect power on

    And it shuts back off.

My guess is now MB. Confirmation anyone or a better way to test it.

Did you try another outlet....it doesnt seem to me like a MB problem...

hmmm...no beeps.... may indicate a bad CPU but in this case...not sure... is there a fan header that's not plugged in that's triggering a failsafe on the MB? Just for S+G's....try clearing the cmos...

The MB has LED's for diagnostics. It says CPU. Looks like it may be time for an upgrade.

Luckily I can pin the whole thing on the wife -- a scapegoat is born.

    That's convienent....wha'd she do?

She happened to be the one to turn it on the day it died. Not her fault but at least now I can say because of her I "have" to upgrade.

Before spending money you can check a few things,

    a) is the CPU seated in the ZIF socket ALL THE WAY...
    b) this sounds like the MB is shorted hence it powers on for a second, detects short, shuts down, then when you turn the power all the way off (unplug from wall etc) it will spin the fans for a second before it redects the short and goes back to nothing...

Or you can use this as a convient way to get the wife errr scapegoat to allow you to upgrade, ohh and get a new motherboard and more ram in the process once you have permission :)

AcidicDreams has a point. Try reseating the CPU first...

My board has LED to use for diagnostics. They say the CPU. So I put another CPU in that I'm pretty sure works. Same thing. I'm down to at least the MB that's dead.

Also checked to ensure new PS wasn't set to 220. Checked to make sure no connectors are grounded.

I could easily replace just the MB but the CPU probably won't work with the shinny MB. So new CPU, but then the RAM probably won't work. Let the domino effect begin.

    I'm in morning, really.

Hhhmm, athlon 64, pc3200, asus SK8N, Lian Li 82 case, the sadness continues

try removing the mb and any unessecary components and running the mb on something that won't let it ground and won't shock it with static...
