no o/p from agp slot

edited October 2003 in Hardware
a little brain teaser for you all .... it's drivin' me crazy ... and i've run out of ideas

new build system:

p4 3.0 ghz
mobo: msi 875p neo fisr, now changed to gigabyte 8knxp
artic cooling supersilent 4 cpu cooler
2 x 512 mb ddr400 ram
pny geforce fx 5200 8xagp (+ 4xagp 3d prophet for testing)
psu's: q-tec 400wp dual-fan & antec true blue 350w (250w on old system)
120gb sata drive
120 gb external drive f/w usb

mobo 1: initialization failure - board returned
mobo 2: no vga or dvd-i o/p - board returned
mobo 3: same as mobo 2 (start to think i'm doing something silly at this point)
mobo 4: change to gigabyte 8knxp - same problem!!

have tested new system with two cards - no change
2 different monitors - no change
different cables no change
mobo out of case - no change
diff. power supplies - no change
re-insert cards - no change (inc. ram)
all fans working (inc. on agp cards)
mem led onboard lit - meaning can see ram
2xdet led unlit for both cards (will lite if card is 2xagp and therefore not compatible)
buzzer attached - no bleeps

rebuilt old system:

amd 700mhz
maxtor 40 gb ide drive

try geforce card - doesn't work!!
try 3d prophet card - works!
re-try geforce card - works!!! (and everytime since ... )

run out of ideas and can't believe that i've 3 duff boards with the same problem from 2 diff manufacturers - even my luck's not that bad (well ... actually it usually is).

    Ouch.

Well, just because it can see the ram doesn't necessarily mean it's a good, non-defective stick. Also, this could very well be the cpu... by process of elimination those are the only two components you haven't swapped out that can cuase such an issue.

absolutely right ... cpu main culprit ... mobo out of case (don't trust it now ...) clean up thermal compound, reseat ... works a treat.

    cheers m8ty!!:p

    stoopid u ain't ... :D

Glad it was "that easy" (though all the swapping you did up-and-to that point wasn't exactly "easy"). :)
