Linksys Router Help

edited October 2003 in Hardware
Alright i have a BEFSR41 Linksys Router, right. I believe this is the source of all my problems. I have two computers, a PC and a Macintosh (parents bought it). Anyway, when my dad tries to log on AOL (parents choice) through the router, AOL basically rejects him. When he is plugged in directly to the modem, AOL allows access. My guess is the built in Firewall. So my goal is to turn off the firewall as much as possiible, but i don't know how to do that. Someone help me! If you don't think thats the problem, plz share your thoughts. THANKS!

Look for the feature in your router's admin interface regarding "port forwading"... you'll have to find the ports that America Online use (can prolly find off www.google.com), BUT, if not, then look for a section in the security page entitled "DMZ" and enable it. Then set the "DMZ host IP address". In this case, it'd be the IP address of your AOL computer.

But when you do that, I highly reccomend you install some sort of firewall on that computer then, coz DMZ exposes the computer.

Also, I think (for convenience sake) you should try calling AOL... it would be impossible for them to NOT have documentation about the work around for such an issue as more and more people use multiple PCs at home through a router/switch/gateway (granted, most of them are probably not using AOhell :p )... but they should be able to at least tell you what ports to allow/forward.
