I have an MSI kt4v mobo with an amd 1.4ghz 266fsb tbird, I use the bundled PC alert 4 software to monitor my cpu temps, I also use the cooling software which helps a lot but heres the problem.

at idle my cpu temp is like 110F, at full load such as playing a game it will rise to like 146F and the alarm goes off and so i have to stick a bigass house fan up to my case to cool it off. Is this because my thermal compound was not applied properly? I'm using a Volcano 7, which I think should be sufficient. Is my probe just stupid? I have ample ventilation in my case. Kind've rambling, sorry.

apparently this is normal behavior for this board.

some people report that their cpu's run @ 140F idle!.

my guess is that the probe is screwy.

I too have a MSI mobo, not the same one, and have been disapointed by the cpu temps since the begining. (idle temps at about 46-48C with more then enough airflow.):( I don't have a tremendious amount of confidence in MSI's thermal probes.

You might want to look into an external (bay style) thermal moniter/display if you want precise measurments for O-Clocking.

Ah, ok thank god. I was kinda worried about having 145F degree temps for an extended amount of time, but then as time went on I just said screw it. But then I've just been worrying about it again. thanks.

Oh yeah ever since I adjusted my fsb and multiplier settings when I first got the board (like a year ago), the processor has always been recognized as an Athlon XP 1600+, I assumed it was because they were rated at the same speed, but It might be because I did something stupid a long time ago and did calculate it right, but who knows.

I don't think anyone considers any of the volcano series to be a serious HSF. How much airflow is in that case? You do know you are running the hottest running CPU AMD ever made, right? Like I always said about volcanos: "Guaranteed to make any core molten!"

Sorry not picking but you really can do much much better.

Yeah, I used to use it with my older athlon lol. It's all aluminum no copper so I'm sure it sucks. I was looking at an SK7 a while back but never got it. I'm fixing to turn this computer into my secondary one anyway and build another one. So i'll just get 2 new hsf's

I have ample airflow, not that many fans, but they are very efficient. I can take the case apart and I will get basically the same temps. I just have one exhaust and one intake.
