My Order is in

The new stuff is on the way. An ABIT nf7-s with a barton 2500. I've heard that the barton's multipliers are unlocked. Is that true?

I also bought 1 gig(512x2) matched Corsair XMS-3200 RAM and an Antec Truepower 480w PSU. What kind of speeds should I be looking at as far as overclocking?

It took me over a month to decide what to get, but now I ordered it, I can't wait the week it takes to get it. Isn't that always the way?

great gear!!! well NF7 unlocks the cpu's.

if i were you, i would go out and get a nice thermalright Heatsink, it will complete your kit and you will not be sorry.

ur gonna enjoy this rig, i had the same setup at 2.3ghz with a Thermalright SLK900A

Great set-up! The wait and careful selection of components will pay off with the great system you will have when it's all together. The selection of 2 x 512mb DIMMS will result in a little less overclockability but pay off with buttery smooth operation of Win XP or any operating system and just about any app or program you throw at it.

The Bartons themselves are not unlocked but as citrixmeta said the NF7-S unlocks them.

2.2 - 2.3 is a certain reality for speed with 2.4'ish possible but not likely on air. With 2 x 512mb RAM the chances of OC'ing higher will be a little lower as the larger DIMM's will take more power as compared to 2 x 256.

I will second the suggestion to get a top notch HS like the Thermalright SLK-900 and a good 92mm fan. The main advantage of the 900 and 947 over the others is the ability to use 92mm fans as opposed to 80mm fans and allows you to move more air quieter. I highly recomend buying cooling gear from svc.com as they have great prices and customer service. I have been using them for 2 years now and have been extremely happy. They currently have the SLK-900A (clip mouted) on sale for $29.99 and the SLK-947U (uses the 4 holes around the socket) for $31.99. The two HS's are the same except the 947 has slightly different dimensions to allow easier mounting on more boards sine the 900 was a very tigh fit and didn't even fit on some other boards at all. The "A" means it clips on to an AMD socket while the "U" means it is univesal for both AMD and Intel boards and attaches with the 4 holes around the socket. I recomend a good 92mm fan with at least 56CFM of air flow.

    Enjoy! You did well.

Pretty much everything I ordered was as a result of the wise recommendations of the Icrontic gurus. I didn't know to order a Thermalright heatsink though. I went with an Alpha PAL8045U, which I see they also sell at SVC.

I'll test it out and see if it meets my needs. If not, then I'll pick up a thermalright. Anyone have any experience with the Alpha?

Oh noes!!! That's what I upgraded from with my Thermalright. It is an excellent HS but the 2 Thermalrights I listed above are easier to install and you wouldn't need to remove the motherboard from the case to change the CPU in ther future. That was the main reason I quit using my Alpha. I also now wish I would have gone for the SLK-900 instead of the SLK-800 that I now have because the 900 is able to use 92mm fans that are noticeably quieter and capable of pushing more air. If it's not too late I would call SVC and change it. Really, I would! Don't forget you need a fan for the all of these including the Alpha since none of them come with one.

I ordered it with the rest of my stuff from Newegg. It's already on the way. The model I ordered comes with an 80mm fan. Outside of the difficulty of taking it off again, it's ok cooling wise?

I plan on living with the setup I just ordered until I go to a Athlon-64 someday, which will be a whole different setup anyway.

The Pal will do, with a decent 80mm it should overclock okay (but not to the cpu's fullest potential, even on air). Barton's generate a lot of heat when you start pushing more voltage through them.

It will work great. The fan they have on there is lacking in airflow, which will affect how much of an OC you will be able to avheive and they are a bit on the loud side for the amout of air they push. I definitly whould have recomended buying the Alpha bare and picked a fan of choice. Otherwise you did well! Make sure to find a guide on installation since the directions are a bit vague and they can be a bit difficult if not familiar with the set-up.

Here is a link to Alpha Novatech's site to the install guide for your heatsink. BTW, Alpha says they designed it for the fan to suck air off of the heatsink to get best performance but I've found that mine seems to perform better with the fan blowing into the heatsink without the shroud directly underneath the fan.

Ok, then I'll try it with the fan blowing into the heatsink. The Alpha works ok for you?

    Drew,

You need to try it both ways as each system is different. I had mine in 2 separate set-ups and one liked it in while the other liked it out. The difference was about 4 degree C on both systems. When you test you need to have the case closed to be certain of your results. Each system is different so experimentation is key with the fan and the airflow in your case.
