IE wont load background images...

I just got finished (I thought) fixing a friends machine. He was having a problem with the winsock, and wsock32, - couldnt get online in spite of the fact that the machine would dial up and connect to and ISP. I dont know that this is related, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

The prob now is that IE wont load any background images, and it wont resize content of a window. Normally, if an item is too big for a frame, you get the sliders, so you can view the whole thing. Not with this. It only allows you access to what is visible, no sliders, so if there is a button at the bottom of the page, the only way to get to it is to TAB to it.

If you click on my sig, you are taken to a page with a black bg, and tan colored links & text. When he clicks on it, the links are normal (link=blue, alink=red, vlink=purple) & the text is black on a white background. But on the same machine, if you use Mozilla or Opera or somethin, it works fine. I have looked everywhere, and can find nothing.

Ideas?

best thing u could do now is..

    launch IE
    go to tools
    select internet options
    click on the advanced tab
and click on the restore defaults options.

try that see if it helps.

Did that first. This is one of those weird little hiccups that I can't get rid of. I updated to IE 6.0 ...no good. Even overlayed windows...no good.

I know there is a switch I can use to completely overwrite the IE files, but I'm uncertain what it is, or how to use it. Gonna know after this....

Only if you have a copy to reinstall... M$ has officially stopped their support/distribution of VM, so you need to install the sun java floating around...

    thought of something else too........

There is a prog called IEradicator that is supposed to completely remove IE, except for 2 files: shdoccvw.dll and mshtml.dll - those are left to enable the html 'engine' for other browsers.

I wonder if extracting these from the source disk would have any impact on this?

Everything, at this point, is worth trying! *(and that isn't a bad idea either)
