Problem Making Files Private on XP Home
JLamy
UK
Hi people.
I am trying to seup my laptop so that my user files are made private so that other people who use it may not access my stuff. I followed the instructions in the Windows Help section (my computer, C: drive, Documents and Settings, JLamy folder [my user folder]. Right clicked on 'My documents' folder inside JLamy folder, select properties, Sharing tab. This point where I have problem. I want to tick the 'Make this folder private so that only I have access to it', but it is greyed out. I cant figure out why. I am loggd on as me at system administator level so should be no restrictions, partition is NTFS formatted.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

That's the rub... I really can't help because all my NT training was in 4.0 server/workstation and at work (windows 2000) I only offer basic tech support and can't even access the meat/potatoes of the network, and at home have no reason to setup NT authentication on my windows XP Pro box.
What I will say is that XP offers the opportunity to prompt users at startup to login, once that occurs it's supposed to only allow each user to see his/her files. This isn't occurring and it's now over me head .
Sometimes problems on the internet tickle me into research mode, but when it comes to microsux I try to avoid epending any additional braincells to their swiss-cheese programming.

I will double check that everything is as it should be for private folders. Could it be that the hard disk is formatted as FAT32? Unlikely I know but you never know. Samsung X10 laptop in question was bought in Hong Kong with Win XP Home Edition preloaded.
