Radeon 9700 error problem

edited October 2003 in Hardware
I have a prophet radeon 9700 pro installed.
Most times when I play Homeworld 2 the Game loses Focus after a while without returning to Desktop and doesn't give me a chance to quit without reboot. In pne if two times the game quits to Desktop when the error occurs..

any idea?

Machine:
Athlon 1800+
Gigabyte 7vrxp
1024mb 266 RAM
SBlive
Radeon 9700pro

What drivers are you using? The 3.8s came out this month. Have you tried playing the game with the latest drivers?

BTW, welcome to the Icrontic Forums! :)

I wouldn't recommend the 3.8 catalysts quite yet, still some suspiscion surrounding them... but the 3.7s work fine (for me).

Could be a bunch of dfferent things. Overheating of the video card or cpu, resource conflict, etc... is this the only problem you're having with this pc? Are you overclocking or running at defaults?

    3.8 catalyst is installed..

    - My System runs at default, I didn't overclock anything

    - Sometimes I have Probs with Bf1942. It also quits to Desktop
but the error differs from this one.. I can simply rejoin bf1942
but with Homeworld i have to reboot..

I had the same problem when BF first came ouit, I ended up selling the game a week later out of frustration. I believe a later patch/update had solved my issue, but I haven't tried it since (and I have since bought new gear).

It sounds to me like a conflict. If you have PCI cards, sometimes swapping them around or not usnig the PCI slot directly below the AGP helps (believe the top PCI slot shares the AGP's IRQ address). ot 100% sure there, but anything's worth a try as it only takes a few minutes and windows should redect the device in the new slot without having to reinstall everything/drivers... otherwise, maybe falling back to the 3.7s could help, if the current 3.8 driver issues were true, you could be overheating because of a driver optimization (a theory that's floating around on the internet, no definitive proof yet)...

I don't know if this is against Icrontic policy, but a really good site for ATI questions and info is:

    http://www.rage3d.com/board/

They have a sections on conflicts and problems with ATI cards and various games.

We're all one big pool of info, it's fine to suggest any source that would help solve the problem. :)

And Rage has a great site.
