WinXP Pro won't install

I had this machine dual boot 98se/XP Pro for about a year, but now 98 has been getting too many blue screens so I decided to put only XP in.

I boot from XP CD - all goes normal until "Starting Windows" - where it starts to actually write files to HD. Screen goes blank, just sits there.

I unplugged my new CDRW, ZIP disk and the 80G WD. Also tried removing memory and other cards (which have been there long time). Tried several other XP disks - same exact result with known good.

I installed 98se fresh - no problems except for normal 98 stuff and 98 WOULD boot before, as would XP (it ran fine) so HD is ok. (2 partitions on a 30G WD). No problems accessing files, just too many BSOD in 98.

I have a Gainward G4 TI4200 GS video card. Is this what is causing problem? I installed XP with my old Voodoo5 (sold it) before.

I don't want to buy a video card just to try installing.

ABIT KT7 RAID
1 G Tbird (No OC)
384M pc133 Crucuial running at 133 (I'm a weeinie)
No RAID array - drives on IDE3-4 (worked fine 98 and xp before)

Have you tried upgrading an installation of 98 to xp?

HalOfBorg your worst fears are probably true. It's the video card. You will need to find something for the install. After that, all will be cool.

Yeh - I thought of the "Install 98 & Upgrade to XP" idea - on the way home with my freshly installed & updated 98 box.

So - when this install of 98 gets too cranky to live with (6 months? ;) ) THEN I'll try different video cards. Friend has several, I'll try 'em one by one 'till I find one that works.

OR - buy another Voodoo5 somewhere. I KNOW that one works.

    Thanks again!
