XP, 2K, 98 Networking

I have 4 PC's, 2 with XP Pro (Called A & B), 1 with 2K (Called C) and the last with 98SE (Called D).

1. C sees A and B and can read / write A, but cannot do anything with B.

2. A and B see C and can read / write C

3. D sees nothing and cannot see anything either.

The most perplexing is 1 because all of the settings appear to be exactly the same. Perhaps there's something simple I'm missing.

Any questions, ideas welcome.

Are they all in the same workgroup?

    same router/switch/hub/whatever your using?

I know whenever I can't see things at a lan its because I'm in a different workgroup then everyone else.

I honestly don't know about not being able to read/write though...

    They are all same workgroup.

    Linky BEFSR41.

I believe my truouble is related to the security settings in XP and the fact 98's in the mix, but...

yeah, i have noticed that a lot of my problems, especially at lan partys, stem from xp networking security features. its been a while since i have messed with it, but i think one of our big problems was under a tab (somewhere) and you had the option of turning simple network security on or off (simple was on by default) and that seemed to cause a lot of the problems. unfortunately i cant remember where that is but i THINK it was somewhere where you wouldnt expect (folder options for example, although i just checked, and i dont think its there). anyway, the other thing, is make sure you check the simple stuff (namely hardware) multiple times especially with computer D. cables, uplink ports, internet ports, nics, everything. you just want to be absolutely certain that the problem you are dealing with is software rather than hardware. if there is a suspicion that a nic might be bad or something else, swap it out and test it, that way you will be completely certain that isnt the problem and then you can focus solely on configuring windows. good luck, i hope this helps . . .

    Drowd...thanks.

No problem with cables or nic cards. Simple file sharing disabled.

Apprarently it's more complicated than that.

Perhaps I need some pixie dust? :)

It has to do with the LEVEL of security offered in a NT environment (XP) versus the workgroup/"MS Networks" security offered in 95, 98, and ME. XP does its security through group and user assignment. For the most part windows 98 does it based on users and local passwords. 98 has to specifically open up the flood gates to specific resources/folders/drives in order for any other machines to see/access them, XP has to do something similar but the trick is SEEING the XP box to even get the available folders listing! Often the workgroup assignment trick will work (have all the machines assigned to the same workgroup, 'MShome' or 'workgroup', etc). This hasn't always worked, and at this point I usually give up. I did find that the order in which the machines appear on the network help 98 see the NT machines. If you have the NT machines already on and broadcasting it tends to increase the odds of getting windows 98 to see them.

Thanks. I will try to set a usename and password on the 98 box to match the XP boxes.

I'll see what happens from there.
