I have an old 10 gig seagate from around 99 thats still working fine in one of my machines. Its been abused quite badly too and has survived everything that has been thrown at it.

I have a 80gig 8mb cache WD hard drive in my main machine and the performace is really good, only had it for about 6 months though so cant tell you how reliable it is.. No problems so far though, but it was very picky about jumper settings when it was first installed. Other than that, its been very good.

Both are good with my current vote going to the WD. I have had just about as many Seagates as WD's and never had any problems with any of them. I only say WD now because the have been more of an inovator and their drives seem to be on top at the moment.

I know what your getting at mtgoat.

You would probably see better performance with the WD but the Seagate would probably last a bit longer.

The WD will last way beyond its usefull life though, you will be buying a replacement because you need more space, not cause the old one died on you.

Just stear clear of IBM/Hitachi :P

nah new Hitachi's aren't necessarily bad. IBM has even released a pseudo-fix (by way of firmware) for the old deathstars. either way, its all good and i'd go with whatever's cheapest
