Please help kg7R bios update&winxp

edited November 2003 in Hardware
well to start off with i used to come to this site all the time before the site update when i was in the process of putting this computer together from scratch( about 1.5 yr ago). I learned how to build it from this site.

unfortunatly i need to update my bios now. I did it once when i had win me and updated to the 5w bios. (learned that here to)
now winxp is a different animal as i have found out trying to do this update.from what i tried i take it I can no longer use a floppy to do this?

I have the new bios downloaded (KG7_dm) but from here i am stumped. I haved looked through your forums but cant find a thread where i might get some insight(maybe im blind or to frustrated to see it) abit site has a TIP highlighted for xp but the page wont come up.

but could 1 or 2 of you guys help me out and explain what i need to do step by step (yes i know im a newbie to this :-) )

as i stated i need to update a KG7_R 5w bios on a win xp home comp.

thank you

The procedure hasn't change since you flashed last.
There is a new flash utility that runs from within windows but doesn't support your board.

Anyway, insert a blank floppy, open My Computer, right click drive A, select format and check 'create an MS-DOS..."
When done delete everything except command.com, io.sys and msdos.sys
Unzip the bios file you downloaded from Abit to this floppy and reboot your computer.
if you're OC'ing, downgrade your settings to optimal or default before flashing.
If it doesn't boot from the floppy, you need to select floppy as your first boot device.
When you finally get to a DOS prompt like this a:>\ type runme and let go until you get a message to reboot.
You may have to adjust some settings in bios after the flash.

LMK if you need more instructions. Good luck!

    Thanks Equito

ok ive formatted the floppy and checked creat msdosstart disk .
after that you say to delete all but command.com io.sys and msdos.sys. but.... where are they? They not in the new disk i made if thats where they supposed to be.

the rest of what u said looks pretty strait forward and i shouldnt have a prob with your instructions. thanks

Below is a pic of a newly formatted startup disk. Look at all those files in there. If you can't see them, turn on "view all files" on Windows Explorer.

oh boy now i know just how little i know and feel like the first time i did the flash it was all just dumb luck.

on my disk it made, it shows the ega paths, the keyboard paths, display, and msdos mode. i have also put the bios on it( awdflash, abitfae, runme.bat, KG7_DM.bin).

I have looked around my comp to try to turn on "veiw all files " in win explorer but cant find it. can ya help a moron find it, lol

also if ya want me to post a pic of what i got on the disk i can do that buuuuut would need to be told how to do that to, doh lol

sorry bout my very little comp knowledge but you r helping me a great deal. thanks

Don't feel bad dude, we were all noobs once and we keep learning new things everyday.

To turn on "view all" do this:

Open Windows Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Option, View Tab and check "show hidden files and folders", I'd also uncheck the other two 'hide' options.

Sorry, I forgot to tell you how to post pics.
The easiest way is to open MSPaint, for a full screen capture press Ctrl-Shift-PrtScr, then Ctrl-v to paste and save as .jpg
To capture the active window only use Ctrl-Alt-PrtScr and repeat the next two steps above.
Then, while you're repling to a post use the Attach file menu to browse your drive and select the pic you want to attach.
I use Hyper-Snap that allows me to capture portions of the screen including live video.

Got it i appreciate the help

what i didnt do before was uncheck the other two items below Hidden files and since it didnt show anything new i thought i was in wrong place but now its showing all the files that you mention.

now im getting ready to delete the files you dont want on there and flash this baby.
if i dont return by afternoon tomorrow i will have done something stupid and off to order a new MoBo :-)

    thanks for all the help

Backup the old bios to the same floppy when asked and don't remove it after flashing to ensure a boot block recovery if something goes wrong.

    Good luck!
