odd cpu problem

edited November 2003 in Hardware
hey,
my buddy tried to build his own computer and fubared it pretty bad, so i am fixing the thing. to make it turn on, i had to reseat the cpu and heatsink (he let it run for about 10 min before it posted just beeping that something was wrong). so the thing finally turned on. specs:

asus a7n8x-x
XP 2500
512 corsair pc3200
120gb wd caviar paralell ata
ATI R9700

on a side note (humorous) he had the 2 cdroms connected to the hard drive with the same ide cable and wondered why the mobo couldnt see anything.

So i popped in a winxp cd and it loaded all the drivers and got to the part where it said windows is starting setup, and then it froze. So i swapped in my cpu (xp 2200) and the thing ran fine and installed windows and ran everything fine. So i tried the 2500 in my system where the 2200 came from and it got to the windows (also xp pro) screen and then the progress bar just froze, but no bsod.

any thoughts on why the cpu would work enought to post but not to run any os's? oh yeah, tried a bootable knoppix linux cd and that one froze partway through the loading screen.
is there any way to salvage it or is this one up for RMAing?

    my comp does that when its OC'd too far. try dropping the fsb to like 100 and see what happens.

    if it works, i'd say that chip shouldn't be rated 2500+

    cpu = bad.

    happened to me when i built my brother's computer...i trouble shooted every single damn part of the computer cuz it seemed like a RAM problem, and the manufacturer insisted it was hard drive related, and blah blah blah. he probably put on the heatsink backwards, or the cpu was just damaged. when i put a new one in, all my problems went poof and disappeared

    just my 2 cents
