limmit on length of IDE cables??

out of curiosity... What is the limmit of length an IDE cable can be? I know ive seen 3 feet out there but can it go longer?

    from what ive read u actually dont want to go any longer than 18". something about signal strength and data being loss.

    Of course, you can always add some kind of signal booster, but I don't think there's such thing as that so it would somehow have to be doen yourself, and really not sure how I'd do it, would not risk equipment playing with voltages on that. I assume it would involve adding a small ammount of current to each wire, but the ammount is the issue.
