I'm trying to install a dual boot system with Win2K and Win95. I have done it before on 2 other machines with no problem. I think with new hard drives though. BUT NOW HERES MY PROBLEM.......I ran a Segate program to blow away the Win2k and partitions I had on there this morning. I installed DOS 6.22, Win 3.11 then went to Win95. I have to do it this way because my Win95 is an upgrade. ANYHOW, I've done it 3 times and keep getting at the end, when windows is restarting, "Windows Protection Error, you must restart your computer". This happens with a cd version of 95 and just the same with a 13 floppy disk version. COULD my Win2K be lerking in the background someplace causing it? I can get into SAFE MODE of 95 but thats all
HELP...................Bruce

Hey, since you can get into safe-mode then it's prolly a device driver issue you have going on there.

MS' website has an in-depth article with step-by-step on how to troubleshoot Windows Protection Errors @ http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=149962

Since you mention your Seagate utility erradicated your Win2k and related partitions, it wouldn't be causing an issue... afterall, you *can* get into Win95 safe mode.

Also one other thing, I do recall that when you're installing Windows 95 upgrade, you don't actually have to have Windows 3.11 or DOS installed. Just use a boot-disket with CD-ROM drivers. AND when you're in setup and it asks for a previous version of Windows, just stick in like, the first (I think it's the first) Windows 3.11 disk into the floppy and you'll be good to go ;)

Late last night I did just that. I saw the very first of the floppy version had a boot disk for pc's without dos. I did that route. I went with all the setup defaults, I had removed my NIC, Modem, and sound card before I attemted this, thinking to minimise problems. BOY, I didnt have this kind of problem setting up 2 win2k (1 with dual boot) on a network, cable, router with printserver. And all this headache over little Win95. BUT I AM DETERMINED LOL...........Bruce

dont know if I mentioned this. I'm getting the protection error message imediatly when windows does the first reboot durring the setup/install. The mobo is an Epox 8K7A+ and at the point that point I do NOT have any mobo drivers installed yet.

my guess is drivers. The os isn't compatible with the mobo. Check the mobo drivers if they even have win95 drivers on it. My guess is you are most likely S.O.L. for getting win95 to work on this machine.

Acording to AMD, Microsoft, Amd processors above 350mhz have a problem with the "Retail" version of Win95. There is a patch out, but it will only work on Win95 OSR2 or better. All the Win95 (cd, floppy) I have are the retail or OSR1 release. Now trying to get an OSR2 version..................Bruce
