shdoclc.dll/dns error
My DSL will log on and even ping sites, but every time I try to open a website I get a DNS error.
I am Alltel dsl. Operating system Win ME.
The bottom of the page that shows the ie explorer activity says something about shdoclc.dll/dns error.
I ahve saw several other post on other sites on people with similar problems, but no ones seems to know how to fix it.

The most popular threat over the internet, a naggy Dynamic Library Link that's installed under C:\Windows\System32\ folder, comes with the Messenger Plus 3.0 and newer versions
Causes:
1. Your IE homepage is hijacked by http://www.mysearchnow.com
2. Every time you open a new IE page a stupid Ad pop up is displayed
3. Every time you open a new IE page it displays an additional blue tool bar appears down your window above the IE page where you can search for stuff through it
4. Whenever you type a wrong URL you get a stupid blue fonted Ad page named dnserror loacted at Res://C:windows\system\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm instead of the default cute page "Page Not Found" it's no more seen
5. Adds a silver toolbar under the address bar of your IE page, changes it's names of the buttons according to the contents of the current page displayed, the only thing that you can remove by right click on the toolbar itself >> then Help >> then Disable >> then write the security number displayed the OK, then it's gone forever...
How that happens?
The shdoclc.dll file is loacted under C:\Windows\System32\ folder, if you can remove it forever, you'd rest your mind in peace, but NO you just CAN'T...
The shdoclc.dll replicates itself again and again cause the main .exe file that replicate it is located under two places, they are C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Data egg obj
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Funk obj, and sometimes under C:\Program Files\ as well
These exe files adds itself to your startup list so they'd start everytime you start your windows
Sure the names are for example they are not the same everytime you install your Messenger Plus, but they are always obvious to discover cause of the strange given names and the lower case that appears in the folder name, and the small size of the folder itself,
Solution:
now you can go and delete them by yourself, ERROR "Can not delete the file, the file may be in use by windows or one of it's applications"
Or you may disable them first from your startup menu then restart the PC and then you'll be able to delete 'em, WRONG even though they'll come back again...
N.B: I've tried most of the popular Ad/Spyware software to remove it, they all failed even the best one like PestPatrol 5.0
The Real Solution:
1. Uninstall your Messenger Plus
2. Or install System Mechanic Professional 5, within the package a great program "System Mechanic 5 Startup Guard", it'll enable you to disable these exe files forever and putting them on the Balck List, so whenever you they try to add themselves to the startup list Startup Guard will stop 'em, I've tried it myself, you should try it too...
Similar threats also appeared specially the one regarding the Hijcakecd IE homepage, and they are peace of cake to remove 'em therough removing their Regsitry Keys using the most popular free program software HijackThis , use it carefully, cause you'll be messing with the regsitry of your windows, any mistake may cause your IE not to function properly, or to lose your windows forever...
I have messenger plus installed, the newest version, and I don't have any of these problems... Where in the world are you getting your information?
Problem
For the last three days I have been having trouble using internet explorer. I get a screen that says "cannot find server" and at the bottom of the screen it says Res://C:Windows\System32\shodolic.dll/dnserror.htm
When I use other browsers like Netscape Navigator internet works. I need to have Internet explorer up and running as windows xp uses this browser for msn, and other tasks in windows.
Solutions:
Fix One:
This Repair will replace any corrupted file that it can find it some times works.
Use the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files on your computer:
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Open box, type sfc /scannow, and then click OK.
Note that you may be prompted for the Windows XP or Windows XP Service Pack 1, Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation cd.
Fix Two:
How do I reinstall Internet Explorer on my Windows XP
Sometimes you may want to reinstall IE from your XP CD.
To do so follow these steps:
Insert the Windows XP CD in your CD drive.
Open Start / Run and type:
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf
(in one long line. Just copy/paste the above entry)
Press ENTER
You can also use the I386 folder from the CD, just copy it to your HD, but make sure you change the installation path to the new location.
Fix Three:
Remove all spyware from your computer using any of the spyware removal tools out there.
Sometimes removing spyware will corrupt winsock and cause the error to happen. To fix this problem here is a link to a file to download and install and its easy to use and it will fix the problem.
