Priority Level 1(for my listings):Windows 98 SE Internet problem

the problem is that i start the computer, it is connected to the internet for a little while (not sure exactly) but always stops if I don't use the computer for a little while and if I use it a lot in a time period I think it stays connected slightly longer. But it always disconnects, but not completely... If I have Aim or Kazaa or a direct game connection open it stays connected, but if I try to connect after the short period of time when it gets screwed up it won't connect... i.e. Aim says error and doesn't connect, and Internet Explorer says "The page cannot be displayed".

What the hell is wrong here? This is the first install of windows 98 it has ever done this on and I don't think it started right away, so in other words I have hours of stuff installed on the computer. I gaurantee no installations caused this problem (except if it was windows fault) and I have installed Windows 98 SE half a dozen times before on this machine.

I think this is all I have to say... please help.

Is this a dial-up or broadband connection? If it's dial-up or broadband for that matter check to see if you don't have an Idle Time-out option turned on some where in the properties controlls for your connection.

Another possibility (though doubtful) I know that some ISP's now have started dropping users over a period of time of inactivity.

i dont think it is a time out setting, i do not recall ever messing with a setting like this and just searched for it but could not find it. I am just using standard netscape 7.01 and IE 6 something which I don't think have this setting correct? It is the "special" browsers from companies such as aol that have them? I also have the same or almost exact settings on my second computer and no trouble, thank the computer god that the second one is my new one!

Is there a spot I might be missing where the timeout setting could be?

no it's normally not in the browser (not that I've ever seen anyway) it's in the actually dial-up connection area either on your desktop if you have an icon from an installed software or in your network connections area. Often it's not something you have to turn on, but something you have to turn off.

If for example if you've ever started the connection and gone straight into email and not explorer then shutdown email and you've had a window pop up asking if you'd like to shutdown the connection. Most likely you've got time-out stuff turned on (even if that hasn't happened you may still have idle time-out turned on).

From seeing your other posts now it sounds like your machine is starting to die a slow horrible death. I'm thinking it's time to back up what you can and do a re-install. It should be done with win98 probably at least every couple years to keep it running efficiently.

Yep, reinstalled, solved virus and GARBAGE issue, no problems at all.
