Not sure what is wrong

edited January 2004 in Hardware
I moved my comp from college to home. Now occasionally it will start clicking and either move really slow, lock up, or restart itself. I think I have a hard drive going bad but I don't know how to check it. Can anyone tell me how?

quite honestly, if its doing a lot of clicking, theres not much of a chance that anything else is going bad. however, if you really need to do a test, get the sandra benchmarking suite and run the HD tests, see how your drive stacks up. if its very low, i'd say somethings wrong (i cant think of the HD equivalent of memtest86... sorry)

The guy should replace it or you just learned your lesson for having someone else build your computer for you.

Find the brand of the hardrive, go to the website and download the diagnostic program for that drive. If it still clicks, then it's a good sign it's gonna meet it's maker. I suggest you back up whatever you have of value before it completely dies and get a new one, and RMA that damaged one.

Check the power cable connected to the hard drive. I had a drive that would click and the computer would freeze or go slow. Turned out the 5 volt pin inside the molex connected has come loose and started to slide out.
