PCMCIA Wireless Cards.

Hey,
I have a wireless network at home, including a Wireless PCMCIA card for my lappy. All is great, I totally recc. wireless to all. My problem is that my PCMCIA card sticks out of the side of my lappy by about 2cm, and I keep knocking it, so much so that it now has a hairline crack on it. Does anyone know of a Wireless PCMCIA card that doesnt stick out of the cardbus slot, so is totally flush to the laptop? I have been looking around for a little while, but cant seem to find any.

Im assuming that the 'sticky-out' bit is the Antenna, which is obviously needs, hence they all have it. I was wondering if there are any 802.11b cards that have a retractable Antenna like some of the bluetooth cards have? Cheers in advance guys.

I'm with you, never seen one that didn't stick out just a bit... and I think you're right, it's probably an antenna... although most cards are good enough they can send/receive fine from within the laptop (like my internal wireless antenna).

A while ago I was looking for the same type of wireless PCMCIA card and unfortunately, came up with nothing.

You're right tho, the bit sticking out is the antenna but it is extremely important. At where I work, twice we've had clients with desktop PC's and wireless PCMCIA cards in the back and the antenna completely snapped. The wireless card wouldn't pick up anything after that :)

But as stoopid briefly mentioned, most fairly new laptops include an internal antenna, which is used in conjunction with a mini-PCI wireless card rather than PCMCIA.

Yea. I bought an old lappy, its only a Samsung with a Celly 650 in it. All I needed was a mid range Laptop with a DVD drive and a reasonable amount of ram in it. I dont game on it, just use if for Uni work and watching DVD's on the move.
It doesnt have a mini-PCI slot, I had already looked into that. Looks like im stuck with it. I will snap it soon, without a doubt.

Even if someone brought one out that used both of the PCMCIA slots it would do me. They could put an extra large but enclosed antenna in the 2nd bus space. I dont see why they cant bring one out.... :(

Any idea what the power output on that is? As you can get a Netgate one with 21dB output for that price, and it does 11g and 11a too.
