Overclocking my XP2000+ also

these are my specs:

AMD Athlon XP2000+ T-bred core (@1671Mhz)
Crucial 512mb PC3200 400DDR single stick
Gigabyte GA7-N400 Pro 2 Nforce 2 (8xAGP 400Mhz)
GeForce FX5600 256DDR 500Mhz
Windows XP Version 5.01.2600 SP1

i have read through kiratekid's tutorial on overclocking and there are a couple of questions i could do with answering ;)

1) On BIOS i am unable to find any setting related to changing multipliers, locked or unlocked (i.e. greyed out or unselectable in BIOS)

2) It says you need to change the speed of your memory to that of your FSB Frequency. i dont know what to do for this, the options i have in BIOS for Memory Frequency are: 50%~200% in 10% steps, [BY SPD] and [AUTO]. which do i change it to, bearing in mind that when the Memory Frequency [BY SPD] x FSB Frequency [133Mhz] = 400Mhz (resulting freq.) But when i have it:
Memory Frequency [AUTO] x FSB Frequency [133Mhz] = AUTO (resulting freq.)

thx in advance

ok, if you can't change settings in bios ( greyed out) then you can't oc.
The xp2000 is locked and that's why the settings in bios are greyed out. Invest in a XP2500 Barton which is unlocked and your board will have access to all the settings.

what about question 2? anyone have an answer for that?

    # 2 is about overclocking. Again you won't be able to do any of that unless you swap cpus.

yawhat? i am asking about the resulting frequency and what the memory should be set to, not asking about the CPU

I think Nebulous needs more coffee.:D

Your #2 question is not quite clear, it looks like you need to set your Memory Frequency to [auto] so that it will track your FSB of your CPU.
The "SPD" is a chip on the RAM module itself that tells your mobo what "factory" timings to use to run stable.

    Thanx ;)

The question: "2) It says you need to change the speed of your memory to that of your FSB Frequency. i dont know what to do for this, the options i have in BIOS for Memory Frequency are: 50%~200% in 10% steps, [BY SPD] and [AUTO]. which do i change it to, bearing in mind that when the Memory Frequency [BY SPD] x FSB Frequency [133Mhz] = 400Mhz (resulting freq.) But when i have it:
Memory Frequency [AUTO] x FSB Frequency [133Mhz] = AUTO (resulting freq.)"

Let me clarify this: Raising the FSB ( ram speed) will result in raising the clock speed of the cpu which in turn is called "overclocking"

Now because the settings on the board are greyed out ( as mentioned), the board itself is running at auto settings defined by the ram and cpu.

The speed on the ram is 200Mhz x2=400Mhz
    Cpu speed is 133Mhz x2 = 266Mhz
Auto or SPD in bios communicates with the chips on both the ram and cpu to run at default or factory set timings/settings. You ram is running slower than 400Mhz so it will run in tune with the cpu speed again defined by the board's default/factory settings.

Again if you attempt to change the settings in the bios ( FSB frequency) or (memory frequency) the PC will not post and you'll need to clear the cmos via jumper or removing the cmos battery thus resetting the board back to it's default/factory settings.

Try this suggestion: Go into bios and set your ram speed to 200Mhz. You do this by changing the [AUTO] setting to "manual" or "User Define" save and exit, reboot the machine. You will find out the machine will not post. Then you just remove the cmos battery on the board for several minutes or use the cmos jumper method. ( refer to the owner's manual for that)

Or you can save yourself the headaches and grief and get different chip, that simple.

    Now about that coffee :D

THAT IS THE POINT!!! I CANNOT CHANGE IT TO 200MHZ, ONLY A PERCENTAGE.

i have a table showing what i mean if that helps:

    System Performance...................[Manual]...........|...........System Performance.............................[Manual]
    FSB Frequency...........................[133Mhz]..........|..........FSB Frequency...................................[134Mhz]
    Memory Frequency......................[BY SPD].........|..........Memory Frequency..............................[BY SPD]
    Resulting Frequency....................[400Mhz]..........|...........Resulting Frequency............................[402Mhz]
    AGP Frequency..........................[Normal]............|............AGP Frequency...................................[Normal]

does that Resulting Frequency show that the motherboard will be using a higher speed than it can (it can run upto 400) or what cos the mobo book is crap, it doesnt explain what all the settings mean.

ok, #1 don't yell at me

#2 your board does NOT overclock
#3 your cpu does NOT overclock

I just pointed that out to you. You can't squeeze blood out of a rock.

What part is it you don't understand? Ok lets see if this works ok, after this i don't know how else i can explain it:

You want to overclock, but there are several reasons why your mainboard will not allow it:

A- The settings are greyed out
B- The XP2000 is a locked chip meaning it will not allow to change speeds ie: Multiplyers ( 10,11,12,12.5 etc)
C- Your board will not let you change settings ( seetings are greyed out)
D- If and when you do try to change a setting ( in percentage) you can only go a very short distance ( setting in percentage)
That is why you posted this: " THAT IS THE POINT!!! I CANNOT CHANGE IT TO 200MHZ, ONLY A PERCENTAGE."

Now because you cannot change settings, you cannot overclock.

Changing settings in the bios to get more speed means overclocking, no matter if it's the Cpu speed or ram speed.

Your setup will not overclock because of this. In order for you to overclock, you will need to get a new board and a different cpu, depending on what you get is dependant on the overclock you can get.

    Now do you understand me?

ah, i understand now. could you recommend a good board? preferably not TOO expensive (i.e. not over £100 if i can help it) but that supports 8xAGP, 400FSB and is easy to overclock with?

i am thinking about getting the XP2800+ because i think they are unlocked these days?

Hmmm, because of the "£100 " , tells me you're outside of the US. My guess is to do a google search http://www.google.com/ Hopefully you'll find a retailer close by to you.

These brand of boards are awsome overclockers and their prices are dropping:

    Abit NF7-s 2.0
    Epox 8RDA+, 8RDA3+
    Asus A7N8X-X -- ( so-so board but still nice)

My votes go for the Abit and the Epox which are the best in their class.

Hope this helps you out. Good luck.

would this be useful if i was to get a new board. i was thinking about the Abit A87 or somethig like that?

Yeah, it's ok. It just gives you certain options to overclock in windows without having to go into the bios for it. For someone who's just starting out and don't know their way around the bios it's a nice little program and easy enough to use. It's not for extreme overclocks tho, but it'll help in some performance ;)

i have just used the system utility, and i got it from 266 to 294 Mhz, which increased my speec by nearly 200Mhz overall! but i can see now when you say that my mobo doesnt support overclocking...half of the options arent available. because it dies when it gets to the higher FSB, is this through a lack of power, considering i cannot change it?

Hey, not bad with a small oc. It's not lack of power, power comes from the psu ( power supply). It's the board's lack of overclocking features and the locked cpu. I also mentioned that that utility only has certain settings available which you can use so you don't have to go into the bios.
