Enabling Internet Cookies

edited January 2004 in Science & Tech
What's Up? I've got a problem here that I was wondering if I could get some advice about. Recently my home built computer crashed and I had to erase the hard drive and reinstall everything. I did that and everything seems to be working fine. The only problem is that while surfing the internet, the computer won't accept any cookies. I am unable to log into any websites and I am writing this message from another computer. I am using dial-up internet provided by Walmart Connect. I'm using the same installation cd that I have used before and it worked fine before. I've looked through all of the internet options and can't figure it out. The problem still exists regardless of whether I'm running Zone Alarm or not, and it's the same using the Walmart Connect browser or Internet Explorer. Walmart Connect won't reply to my questions about this. Do you think it's the internet service or my computer settings? I can always erase the hard drive again and reinstall, though I would prefer not to. My Walmart doesn't have any more cds to try. I would appreciate any help anyone could give on this matter. Thanks.
N. Handy

Have you checked the settings in Internet Explorer? Open up IE, click Tools, Internet Options, then the Privacy Tab. For now try setting the slider all the way to the bottom (Allow All Cookies.) I have never used the Walmart Connect browser, but I am going to guess it is based on IE, so the directions should be similar. Also, this should not be an ISP problem, ISP rarely block cookies.

Open internet exploder and on top you'll see 'Tools'

    Click on that, then go:

Internet Options>Security tab. Make sure you select default settings for all.

Go to : Privacy tab and select default. Then go to Advance tab and check default settings, ok, close out then reboot. That should help. Also since you mentioned you did a clean install of the os, make sure you went ahead and updated windows.

Hey, replying to karate kid. I've looked for the privacy tab, but can't find it. When I open up the tools under IE and go to Internet Options, there are 6 tabs: General, Security, Content, Connections, Programs, Advanced. Is it there on Windows 98?
Getting ready to try Nebulous's suggestions. By the way:

I went in under security and advanced and changed everything to default. Still couldn't find the privacy tab. I rebooted, but it still won't take cookies. I couldn't log into anywhere. Should I go install the latest IE version to see if it will help? Thanks for your posts. I appreciate it.

Yes most definitely install the latest version of IE. That may or may not fix the problem but it's definitely something that you should do.

    It is not your ISP

However you did mention that you used ZoneAlarm. Running Zonealarm or not, if you installed ZoneAlarm and shut it down it can and does sometimes forget to remove any settings you have. Do as the others sugested and if it still does it then you need to run zone alarm again and have cookies enabled within that program as well.

Install the latest IE yes :) Moreso buy A copy of XP if you can, your machine can more than handle it. Your OS is just as important and should be considered an essential part of your machine even the same way you view processing power. You have a fine set up there and Windows98 is your weakest link.

Anyone who has run XP but then has to work on Windows95/98/Me will agree.

Also Windows98 is no longer supported by Microsoft.

I installed IE version 6. This gave me the privacy tab in the internet options. I set it all the way down and enabled cookies in the security tab, and was able to get some cookies. Still I can't log into websites. Like when I go to fool.com, the login page still comes up saying that my browser wouldn't accept the cookie, so I can't log in. This also goes for other websites.
So XP is worth getting? I'll try to get a copy, but I don't know if I have a spare $100 to spare. If anyone has any other ideas, please post. Thanks.

Could be some of your cookies got corrupted. Delete all your cookies (yeah it sometimes sucks) and all your temp internet files.

    That may solve the problem.

The problem is finally fixed. Another user directed me toward this page:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;175662

The problem was that the date on my computer was wrong. It said it was 2012, and that was what was causing the cookie problem. Thanks again to everyone who posted here and helped me out.

    So XP is worth getting?

You'll never go back to 98 if you try it :)
