computer freeze at setup

edited January 2004 in Hardware
Hi, i'm writing to seek help on my desktop computer, any information will be appreciated. here is the situation, my old os was win98se, so i upgraded it to win xp pro, and it works perfectly, somehow, i managed to take the battery out from the motherboard b/c my friend needs it to check if his new desktop have a problem. and when i put it back in, it runs for a while and then shuts down by itself, and it repeats like that afterwards. so i tried to erased everything on my harddrive and install xp on a clean harddrive, however, no matter if it's win98 nor xp, the computer freezes somepoint with the case of win98, and freezes always at the message "setup is starting windows" or something like that for xp. so i wonder if it's the problem with motherboard or the processor or any other thing. also, i tried to install win98 on my friends computer, that is, put my harddrive as secondary and
have his new computer install the system on my, it worked, but maybe it's the configuration differences, i could only have such as 16 color, no network, and etc. and thanks for taking the time to read this.

When you put the battery back into your computer, did it ask you to set the configuration data? For example prompt you to "press F1 for setup"

Did you go through the BIOS setup and disable (or enable) the selections that you had before you took out the battery?

i think my friend did something with the bios, he prolly change it back to normal, b4 he take out the battery, i was thinking maybe its the battery, but i believe it's prolly more of the motherboard or other hardware, btw, it was an old bios, the computer is compaq persario bought it 2 years ago.

Can you actually get into windows from that computer right now? Could you go through the BIOS setup and check to see if:

    ACPI enabled?
    PNP OS enabled?

Is all of the hardware in the computer original? Older computer don't share IRQ very well. So there might be a conflict there.

no, i can't get into windows, after i erased everything, it's empty now. and i think the bios rn't that advance, i dun c acpi nor pnp os. yea, all the hardware in the computer r original, except 2nd cd drive which i had disconnected, and a new ethernet in the pci slot.

When did you put in the ethernet card? Was it in the computer before the battery was taken out?

Was the computer acting strange in any way before you took out the battery?

At this point I would suggest restoring the operating system with Compaq's restore CDs. There might also be a BIOS configuration and/or hardware issue.

    BIOS configuration problem:
look in the BIOS setup for something called "load fail safe defaults" or "load performance defaults" and load them.

    Hardware issue:
Pull out everything except a video card, CD-ROM, HD drive RAM and CPU. See if the computer is stable then. If so, add everything back in one at a time.

If you have open PCI slots, you could try to move your Ethernet card around a bit. Most likely the card is sharing an IRQ with some other card, and that's causing your computer to unstable.
