Upgrading to XP

edited February 2004 in Science & Tech
I am thinking of ditching Windows 98 and upgrading to Windows XP. Is it worth it to purchase the Professional Version over the Home Version? Also, I probably should get the full version over the upgrade, even though I have Windows 98, right?

1: The XP Pro version is mostly designed for networking. Unless your hooking up to a network, or hosting, there is no need for XP Pro. XP home can handle home networking just fine.

2:The upgrade is all you need, provided that you have an original Win98 (SE) CD. If you want to do a complete format and reinstall, then all you need to do is format the drive, boot from the XP home upgrade cd and it will prompt you to put the Win98 cd in the drive. It will then check out the CD and tell you to put the XP CD back in the drive and it will give you a full install.

you will DEFINITLY like XP better!! :D

Yup, Zuntar is 100% correct on this.

One other thing to add. Even though in about 80% of the cases where I've done an upgrade install of XP and it's worked fine. I still fully suggest that you do a 100% clean install it always seems to work better especially after extended use.

I third it. Never upgrade, always reformat. Clean installations always work better.

I fourth that, my windows ME gave me crap in the upgraded XP. Had to reinstall twice, it was a waste of time. It also migrated a few viruses over.

Correction, it migrated 100's (literally) of the jeefo virus. very sneaky (but weak if caught before infected) little virus, not showing signs for a long time, and then I couldn't undo the symptoms.

I should note that it would appear Yagga is extremely unlucky when it comes to his computer and I think is the source of about 90% of the I need help posts of late on this board :)

However his points about the virus is actually another very good reason to doing a clean install. To that list add spyware, adware and all that other junk, temp files, and just general garbage that always is left behind.

Ye, computers are all about luck lol. Sometimes your lucky you get parts that work well together. And sometimes you might be unlucky and even though parts are designed to work together, they don't or screw up sometimes.

On my first computer windows games didn't load, a blue screen came up everytime. My second computer restarted itself randomly, at random moments, sometimes it worked for 3 days and then restarted, sometimes it restarted right after boot.
Now my current third computer, everything works! It only gets better, cant wait to see how my fourth computer will be LOL!
