I know you guys hate xeons but...

I just got the dual xeon motherboard up and the 2ghz cpu's are running at less then 31 degrees celcious with 11 dollar coolermaster heatsinks that are not even strapped on but just sitting on top the cpu's (xeons are much bigger and flatter on top then AMD's) right now and I can't hear them run from three feet away.

That alone is a big plus in my book at this point.

I want to benchmark this weekend and see how the built in gigabit lan and pci-x slots benchmark and I'll let you know what I think.

No the opteron guy was bogus like I thought. But out of 6 grand in sales I was only one of two guys that figured it out in time also. The others are trying to cancel or reverse their paypal payments and that can take 30 days if it works at all. Pretty sad. Some paid over a grand. He had dutch auctions for satelite receivers so its not 6 grand but more like 7 or 8 grand really.

I am pretty careful and have over a hundred buys on eBay and the worst experiance was badly packed stereo amp that came beat to crap. But no scams to date. If your careful you don't really get burned on eBay that much.

These are 2ghz 400fsb xeons with 512 cache. Running a gb of pc2100 reg ecc ddr I bought for 70 bucks. The tyan mb with gigabit and 100mbit lan oboard and bult in video etc with two 2ghz xeons and a gb of reg ecc ddr and two 64/66 slots was about 400 bucks total for cpu'/s. mb, and ram. It uses a regular PSU and stuff so this was a easy upgrade really.

    $400? yer shi**ing me.
some guys have all the luck ...I'm happy for you guy!
That's strictly as a server right?

    Mine are all really servers.

4 servers might seem like overkill to some though... (grin)

Nah it was more like $430 or so I guess

    MB was $120
    dual xeons were $220
    Ram for 1gb was $80

You can do this all the time on eBay though. I probably overpaid because I was in a rush on the cpu's actually. You might be able to getthem for a bunch less.

    Are those the HT Xeons?

I know that I love my Xeons 2.4 400FSB RDRAM chipset...

Althoguh I paid about 10 times what you did... Good going.

I'm sure that you'll find that they are more than adaquate for most applications. :D

Good news! ( I sold one yesterday so I am down to just three adn the msi-k7d is in at MSI's again on a RMA so techincaly I only have two right now.

But I am lusting after a Opteron dualy so I may sell it also when it gets back.

Anyone longing for a msi-k7d with dual 2100's with sk7's on top and a GB of reg ecc? Give me a shout in a week or so.

One if the bid differances really is it has multiple PCI and even PCI-X buses so you have more bandwidth available.

Then again its weird to see all the goofy PC bridges and **** in the system devices for sure.

The board was cheaper then you could normally get a used AMD dualy board for. And its got video and gigabit lan onboard also and the gigabit lan thats built in is pci-x even. The pair of used cpu's was a hundred bucks more. But if you consider adding a 64bit gigabit nic and stuff to the AMD its pretty much a wash really.

And its running at 32 and 31 degrees on the cpu's with little quiet coolermaster fans on them too. My one bitch with AMD is the god awful huge noisy heatsinks you have to put on the faster ones to be stable. Especially in a rack like mine. My sk7's and adjustable 80'mm fans ran me about 40 bucks a pop so by the time you get a heatsink on the AMD your about even really.

    I'm running my Dual Bartons @ 1500mhz and with SLK900 ($20 @ SVC.com) they're running at 110F/44C Full load.

The 2100's I got from you teemed with teh latest msi bios and the sk7's That I paid about 25 a pop for plus the speed adjustable fans etc... Had me idling in the mid 40's tp loiw 50's without acpi. When it was hot in here in the summer I idled in the low to mid 50's. Before it was racked.

And I HARE getting the damn sk7's on and off. The socket clip and the goofy fan clips are the dumbest pieces of sh*t I have seen come my way in a while.

I like my very easy to get on and coolermasters on my xeons. That I was overpaid for and they were 11 bucks.

Using the K7D soured me on the SK(x) series heatsinks. They can barely cool CPU1 and CPU2 near the power circuits really cooks. Also that clip mechanism is a pain in the ass. The SLK (700,800,900,947) series is a lot better. The Wire clips stick into the fins themselves and stay there. Changing a fan is a snap. Even though they're normally more expensive (>$30) I've been able to catch all of mine on sale at one place or another. (3 SLK700 @$15 per from SidewinderComputers and 2 SLK900 @ $20 per from SVC.com)

Also I learned recnetly that the early K7D models can't handle the power draw of Dual Bartons running 1.8ghz and higher. Since mine are 15x modded, I had to change mine from 133mhz to 100mhz operation to stabilize everything. Dammit. (this board has got to go... :) )

It still compares well to Dual P3 1.4ghz 512K and probably even that dual 2.0 Xeon of yours. And since I'm downclocking the Bartons I can probably drop to 1.5v to run even cooler.

BTW if you decide to sell those 2100+ LMK. :)
    ===================================

Well I just droped vcore to 1.5v from 1.65v and CPU1/CPU2 is now 40C/46C (Full Load - Thermal diode)
