I have a router with a firewall. Since I got that I hadnt had a problem with those lame messenger service pop ups. my port 139 is blocked. But recently those popups have returned. I know I can disable "messenger" with services.msc, but Ive gone through 5 win xp +sp1 installations. It may be a coincidence, but every time I went to disable it, after shutting down then returning to my computer later on, upon bootup it would get to the windows loading screen, the bar will do 1 or 2 passes, then my computer would reboot. Im trying to narrow things down to whats causing that, and I want to eliminate the "messenger" possiblity. But thats off topic.......

What ports does messenger use? any others besides 139?

as far as i know 139 is the only port it uses, and my linksys router seems to block most pop-ups. but i havent started to receive any more popups either, so maybe its a geographical or isp thing. you can open up a command prompt though and run netstat to see if there are any connections open that shouldnt be . . .
