Video Card Help

edited February 2004 in Hardware
Ok i just got a new video card nVidia GeForce4 8x MX440 with 128MB DDR w/ TV out. It seems to work fine for the first 5 minutes or so then it gets wavy red lines across the screen and freezes when i try to shut down or close programs. Do i need a new monitor or what?

That could be an indication of the gpu overheating.

Sounds like heat to me too... Has the Heatsink on the GPU become loose or something, or the fan (if it has one?) not spinning).

it does have a fan but no heatsink i will take a look and see a little later. By the way all these things i see on pics of vid cards, are they heatsinks or what? i will probably be interested in getting one

sry i dont have a digital camera. but i dont think it has a heatsink its just one of those little fans that come attached to the video card. oh and i checked the fan and thats not the problem

this isnt the card but the fan looks basically like this one

Well the metal surrounding the fan is the heatsink. Just take it off by removing the pushpins. Clean off the bottom of the heatsink and the graphics core the heatsink was on. Apply some thermal grease and put the heatsink back on.
