Here ya go, you'll need to run this utility to make a set of setup disks that will get the process going.

Your mobo needs to be able to boot from cd. So the easiest way to determine that is to go into the bios and check the boot up sequence.

If CD-Rom is in the list you should be able to put the XP cd in the drive and boot straight from it.

Sounds like you used the SP1 floppies and you don't have XPSP1. Either download the network install for SP1 http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp or download the floppies for your
OS. They have it for Pro,Home,ProSP1,HomeSP1. Here is the download center . I'm not sure what you have. You need to have the disk that matches the floppies. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en

You could always stick the hard-drive in another machine and copy the setup files to it.

We don't have a swear filter because, well, not sure why... :p

Are you sure you don't have a hardware issue with your motherboard? It sounds like there's some ide detection issues.

Have you also confirmed the ide cable is tightly connected and the proper master/slave jumpers are being used? Could also be that the cdrom or harddrive on that same ide cable is dying, seen that cause similar issues before.
