External Serial Modem - WinXP Home

I have a new Shuttle SFF PC from ABSPC. The Ultimate X3.

I installed a usr2977 56K modem inside - because my external serial modem v.92 from BestData would not install. The PC simply shuts down during install, then reboots. Boom - power OFF.

I tried the BestData on a HP pc - same result. They both run WinXP Home. MY old pc with 98se and XP Pro - it worked fine.

Pentium 3 pc at work, running Pro - works fine.

My COM ports are enabled, they show as functioning fine.

I tried a Zoom brand serial modem tonight - same results again.

Does XP Home have a problem with serial modems?? Or are they all out to get me again?? :(

HELP!

Bad Modem or serial cable. I have an old external US Robotics that works, it is hooked through the serial port.

Two different modems/brands - AND the BestData works fine on different PC running Pro.

    Also - different cables.

Jeez I don't think Home would treat the modem differently. I just run Pro on all mine so I can't check. Serial is pretty basic stuff. Maybe you have some software program that is running on those machines your modem doesn't like. I'd say go check the website for better drivers but it works on your other machine. Oh well maybe someone else has run into the same problem and has a fix. It is a little slow on the weekends on the forums. Sorry I couldn't help.
