ok so I had windows xp pro. I had my files and folders set as private. Now I forgot about this. So I decided it was time to reformat. I backed up those files onto another hard drive. I reinstalled windows. And now I cant access those files it says "access denied"

how can I fix this? is there a way to "log on" to allow access to those backed up folders?

and i did it yet again, Upon making a password for my account, I blindly ckecked the box that says make folders and files private. How do I undo that also. I can remove my password, but I cannot undo the "make private" thing

Are these files 'Encrypted'? If so - you are boned. Only the original install AND User can read them, as long as they are stored on a NTFS partition.

no they arent encrypted. I did alittle bit of work and went to safe mode and right ckicked the items in quetion, went properties, ten security, then basically chose the take over ownership "option". And now so far all is well
