if by you mean something like net send 192.168.x.x shutdown type of command the answer is no.
You can't remotely do anything like that. You have to use some kind of remote desktop tool like windows built in one or VNC and actually take control of the machine and issue a normal shut down command.
I believe you'd have to allow this on the server though... I can't imagine allowing this functionality by default
BTW, I've never heard of this :o
I forgot to add the -m switch before the comp name/IP, but aside from this, it works I just did it on my colleagues computer @ work right now. You need to have a valid account with admin privelages on the remote comp. A little dialog box on the remote computer will popup saying "Shutdown initiated by blah blah blah. This computer will shutdown in X amount of seconds."
I use this all the time to reboot the server in my closet with no monitor.
the command works on each individual computer only to itself. Is there a setting on routers that could block me from getting it to work remotely, or a windows setting? Remote something or other built into xp doesn't matter, correct, because it is off.

What kind of router do you have and what command are you typing and what message are you receiving?
There is also remote desktop built into XP... clients are available for non-XP computers.
Huh well I'll be damned it is a command and it does work. Though it says this computer is being shutdown by xxxxxx so whoever sends the command will be ID'd. You also have to have admin access on the network share to force another computer to shut down.
It is a Belkin wired ethernet 4 port router.
I used the command you stated in this thread earlier: "shutdown -s -m computer_name"
I get no errors or messages, it allows me to shutdown the computer I send the command on, but I can not remotely get it to work, in other words computer #1 can shutdown computer #1, but not #2, and #2 can shutdown #2, but not #1.
These are XP computers (as well as 2K).
The remote desktop is turned off I think.
Again you need to have network admin rights to do it. Also try just using the machines ip instead of the DNS name. Since if you don't have a DNS running the name will not resolve to anything.
I think something in the router is blocking me from getting through. I have tried numerous times with slight adjustments in the command and have had no luck doing it remotely, however when I say to do it to myself with the same command it works, by this I mean typing in ip or name of computer of the one I am typing it from.
Any new ideas? Anything brought up in here previously is checked off the list of either "can do's" or "must be's". In simpler words, I am administrator and have tried all things mentioned.

And by the way Versello, I know where I saw that "old" picture of yours, it was "The Scream" by Edward Munch. I guess you changed it, though.
