You can't remotely do anything like that. You have to use some kind of remote desktop tool like windows built in one or VNC and actually take control of the machine and issue a normal shut down command.
I believe you'd have to allow this on the server though... I can't imagine allowing this functionality by default
BTW, I've never heard of this :o
I forgot to add the -m switch before the comp name/IP, but aside from this, it works I just did it on my colleagues computer @ work right now. You need to have a valid account with admin privelages on the remote comp. A little dialog box on the remote computer will popup saying "Shutdown initiated by blah blah blah. This computer will shutdown in X amount of seconds."
I use this all the time to reboot the server in my closet with no monitor.
and it's on by default for 2k/XP/server
What kind of router do you have and what command are you typing and what message are you receiving?
There is also remote desktop built into XP... clients are available for non-XP computers.
It is a Belkin wired ethernet 4 port router.
I used the command you stated in this thread earlier: "shutdown -s -m computer_name"
I get no errors or messages, it allows me to shutdown the computer I send the command on, but I can not remotely get it to work, in other words computer #1 can shutdown computer #1, but not #2, and #2 can shutdown #2, but not #1.
These are XP computers (as well as 2K).
The remote desktop is turned off I think.
And by the way Versello, I know where I saw that "old" picture of yours, it was "The Scream" by Edward Munch. I guess you changed it, though.
Any new ideas? Anything brought up in here previously is checked off the list of either "can do's" or "must be's". In simpler words, I am administrator and have tried all things mentioned.
hmm... I wonder if I make sense.
