svchost

my comp has been been going thru random pierods of slow downs
i looked in my task mngr to find that svchost.exe is taking up most of the prossessing power
i can end the task but thats my only idea and i know its a temp fix
any ideas?

    It's hard to tell what it is exactly. svchost is the generic exe that a lot of different services are able to use.

    It could be spyware, I'd probably start by downloading and running adaware and spybot search and destroy and see if they find/fix the problem.

    also be sure you have the latest windows updates, there was a known issue with some svchost services and w2k prior to SP4.

    Check out my spyware article for some tips on spyware removal. It sounds like spyware to me.
