Safe Temps for Athlon 64

Hi, My KV8-Max3 is reporting temps of 54 degrees while idle, and upwards of 60 degrees under load. I am using a Gigabyte GH-PCU21-VG for cooling, and I am not overclocking. I did bump the voltage up from 5.00 to 5.15 just for some added stability becuase the bios overclocks the fsb 4mhz by default. This didn't have much effect on the temps though. I am thinking that the board may be reporting the temps incorrectly, but I am wondering if anybody has any experience with this. I am also using Artic Silver 5.....which is so sticky that when I tried to remove my heatsink, it pulled the cpu right out of the socket with it. YIKES, now that is freaking scary, and it makes me really consider staying away for AS5 in the future. Thanks.

yea the pulling it out of the socket is scary i did it on my A64 3000+ scared me silly!

Thats sounds about right when i look at my 3000+ with stock heatsink and my dads 3400+ with stock heatsink

Adham You can also try flashing/updating the BIOS. When I did that to my MSI mobo, the temps dropped 3-5C, so seems there were some kind of recalibrations for the temp sensors. I heard that MSI's do that, but completely unsure of Gigabyte's.

Arctic Silver 5 is great, but if You put too much of it, it greatly increases the temperature. I myself put too much and my WinXP wouldn't even boot at retail speed, I had to downclock it to boot up! Then I took my heatsink apart, cleaned the processor core and heatsink. And tried to apply the smallest smoothest layer of AS5. It worked and now my computer is back in action with temps lower by 10-15C than stock heatsink.. - maybe you put a very good layer, but then again I do not know.

Also maybe buy a high-end heatsink? I've no idea how the heatsink situation looks for Athlon 64's though. I don't even know if Athlon 64's are for Socket A, or not, so I have no idea what heatsinks are good are not. Boy, I am bad, need to learn about the new generation processors soon.

Mine actually runs at about 41c I would suggest taking off the heatsink and re-applying the artic silver 5, As far as the cpu comming right outta the socket...yeah mine has done that a few times. No matter how much you put on. the surface is large and it makes a hella suction between the cpu and heatsink.Just have to be careful....try to twist the heatsink alil to break the seal somewhat, and make sure when pulling the heatsink off that you pull straight up or out(to try not to bend any pins) not really good for the cpu, but nothing else you can do.

My Athlon 64 3000+ chip runs around 38-45ºC/100-113ºF. The board (Asus K8V-DLX) pretty much runs at the same, but usually 2-4º cooler.

Mine does that everytime I pull out the processor, safe temps I would say between 41 and 60 your still stable and fine at those temps. The suggestion to re-apply the AS5 would be my suggestion as well as make sure you have ample case cooling. The gigabyte boards do read the temps differently then other boards.Best way to get an accurate reading is get yaself a temp prob. and see what it says, pull the heatsink re-apply the AS5 and remember the AS5 takes along while to completely cure.(somewhere around 200 hours or so.)

i also have the Abit KV8-MAX3 mobo and as i write this its at 54c if i run battle field: VN it goes upto 61c. These temps are on stock HS and i have overclocked my A64 3000 from 2.0ghz upto 2.2ghz with no increase of voltage and its still very stable.

i was thinking of getting a better HS just to cool it down a little, but after reading your scary encounters with pulling it out the socket has put me off a bit :/ A mate of mine did a similar thing to his P4, but he actually pulled the heat spreder right off, was stuck to the bottom of the HS!!! (not good)
