GeforceFX 5950 and 3dMark 2001

My card is made by Elsa, and I have found that the 53.03 drivers posted on the Elsa website perform much better than the referance 56.56 drivers in the benchmark. With both sets of drivers my card is continuously "hanging" for a split second throughout the benchmark, and the framerate dips substantially at that time. With the Elsa drivers, I can bang out around 16000 3d marks. That doesn't seem right to me as I was getting a score quite close to that with the Radeon 9700 pro I just took out. I know that Nvidia has had some issues with futuremark, are the drivers just not intended to produce high scores in futuremarks benchmarks anymore? By the way, the card makes a very quiet beep when it hangs for that quick second. Anybody have any knowledge on this subject? Thanks!

Update: I thought maybe something was up with my power supply, because I was getting some serious sags on the 12v rail. Anyways, I put the Geforce FX in my primary computer and it exhibited the same hanging. You know what though, it runs games awesome, so I guess I really won't worry about how well it runs 3dMark.

could the card be heating up?

Yup... Just go to the Settings tab under Properties, then click on the "GeForce FX 5950 Ultra" tab and a little menu should slide out and there will be a "Temperature" page.

I thought about that too, but I haven't found any info on how hot the core can get before I need to start worrying about it. The utility is set for core slowdown at 140 Celcius, and it isn't adjustable, so I guess that is the magic number. I have left the utility open, fragged for a while then checked it out, and I haven't seen it above 80 Celcius. I think something might be seriously wrong with this card out of the box, because I believe it is failing to run at it's stock speeds, and automatically slowing down to the 2d speeds which is just a 300Mhz core. I'll RMA it I think, something ain't right.
