Ok, I am trying to set up a web server on a windows 2000 server machine. I am using abyss. I can access my site from inside my network, but I can’t get it on a remote computer. I’ve looked at all the obvious stuff, like the firewall and what not, I have opened the port, I tried 80 and 8080. Just about every think I know to check, I have. My server uses ICS with 2 nics and I have a Cisco DSL modem in bridging mode on one of them. My ISP is Britsys thru SBC. Frankly, I’m stumped. Please help me.

If I remember correctly, you can't have a server that's using ICS be a webserver. Are you sure you're using ICS? I don't remember Win2K Server having ICS - it has Routing and Remote Access. Can you give me more details on your Win2K server setup? If you can access the site from inside, then I'm gonna assume that your webserver is running correctly, so let's start with the routing setup....

Win2k server does have ICS. And why couldn't you run a webserver with ICS..? Tony, are you sure they're forwarded and to the correct IP (not just "opened")? It is also possible that your ISP is blocking common server ports like 80 and 8080, usually done to prevent things like Code Red from spreading and wasting their bandwidth.

While Charter does not actively have port 80 closed, they have closed it on me before, and for a time, I could not hit my webserver, but I could surf fine. Being the paranoid I am, I shut down, hoping they wouldn't waste my connection.

It is possible they are. If you exhaust all possibilities on your end, try calling your ISP. They shouldn't watch you if you call and ask something like that :)

Well, lets see, the web server software is running on my server so I shouldn’t have to forward the IP address. ICS is on, but a while ago when I had Netzero dialup, for experimental purposes, I was able to set up the server, and people could view it all the time (when I was on). I tried to ping my IP from my g/f's computer and that worked just fine as well. If you want to help me, pm me and if i trust you ill give you my ip. Oh yea, I am also using Zone Alarm Pro. That’s about all I can think of.

Oops... yeah you don't need to forward anything. Try other ports and make sure ZA is configured correctly.

Also, it's dangerous to post your IP on the Internet (well, most people are paranoid about it, anyway). I would edit it out soon.

BTW, ping worked and the only open port was 23. So at least not everything is blocked. I wouldn't run a telnet server though... sniffers pick up passwords on telnet very easily.

We're pretty cool about IPs. We arn't going to 1337 hx0r you or anything, though I'm sure there's a few who know how because of their expertise :P

Well, I sent an email to my ISP and we'll see what they say. In the meantime, I edited my IP out of the message. Thanks for the warning/advice.

Ok, heres what they told me:

Your Cisco 678 modem is currently setup with NAT and DHCP (firewalling mode) which is why you are unable to get your website up.

I looked up on the internet to find out how to change the mode, but the configuration was password protected. So I sent the guy an email back asking him how I can fix it. Frankly, I’m sort of POed that they password protected my hardware and didn’t give me the password.
