A strange way of making a PC quiet.

No, you don't have to hit it with a hammer.

Here is my success story of making a noisy PC to be quiet.

The last 3 years I had trouble with the noise my PC was making. First it was the fans. Some resistors can fix this, but temperatures rise. Then the hard disks make a lot of noise (and I have 4 of them!). So, a very silent PC is not possible due at least to the hard disks.

A friend proposed to put the PC box inside an other box. That's what I did. I ordered a wooden box which was 2,5 times my PC box in the X axis, and was up to my desk high. It has 2 holes in the back, one in the upper side, and the other in the lower side. This way cables go in and hot air goes out.

Ok, now with the wooden box the PC was quite silent, I can even sleep with it on (the PC is in my bedroom). But, as you can realise, it was getting hot. Though it was fine for the winter here in Greece, it wouldn't be ok for summertime.

Here is the trick I used to overcome this issue: the PC is sitting on wooden floor, the wooden floor is some 3-4 cm from the floor and it was closed from all sides. This empty cooridor was perfect for bringing air in. So I made a 120mm hole on the bottom of the PC box, and the same hole on the floor of the wooden box. A 120mm fan which spins at 1300rpm (thus is silent) brings air in. This fan was put at the hole in the PC box and takes power from the power supply. Additionally some variable resistor kit (from titan) takes care of all 3 fan speeds : processor, back fan (80mm) and down (120mm) fan.

Now, the processor goes up to 50oC with the burnK7 utility running and the mobo is practically at room temps. The 200GB WD JB hard disk is around 33oC. Room temp is about 24oC. Those temperatures with all the fans rpms lowered down from 30% to 60%!!!

But the most important: I can't hear a thing!
