yeah so I have these windows popping up off screen. They cannot be maximized or even moved.... because they are off screen and the mouse cant get to them.. they are most likely pop up ads, but some may not have been. I know how to close them but Im looking for a way to not have them pop off screen to begin with....

anyone know how? I think I read a tutorial somewhere on how to do it

Download adaware and spybot, both are free. Run BOTH of them. If they don't find and automatically remove the adware from your machine, you may need to download hijackthis and search for the items and remove them from the registry manually.

There's no easy way to clean your PC once invaded, but there are a few things you can do to prevent this in the future:

1 -- Get a popup blocker. The main way adware gets on your machine is through you clicking yes or no or clicking an image of an X to close on some annoying popup ad.

2 -- Stop going to prOn sites :p The type of sites you visit increases the odds of getting adware installed.

3 -- Don't even bother downloading exe's and other executable files through P2P networks. 99% of the executables on P2P are virus and/or adware laden. If 5MB for all of photoshop 8 sounds too good to be true, IT IS!

4 -- Beware of "free" software. Many freeware programs support themselves by adding adware and spyware to their installation files. It's all legit as they mention this somewhere on page 26 of their 30 page disclaimer/EULA you habitually click 'Yes' through during the install.

Here's an article Primesuspect wrote that covers much of this.

I PM'ed dun dun dun some other options, I wanted to make this into our adware sticky as one is desperately needed and helpful to many of our visiting members. :)

here's a copy of my PM:

I made your recent post a sticky, but your problem may not be 100% adware related. I chose to use your thread as a sticky for our increasing adware issues, which is why I'm PM'ing some more, un-adware related solutions...

Iexplorer has a way of remembering how to behave, so when you resize and such it will remember these settings.

Here's a few knowledge base things to try:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;211068

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;167099

There's a key combination to hold when closing the resized window so iexplorer knows to set it as default, but essentially if you right lclick the loaded window at the bottom, select maximize or restore (depending on what's available), resize, then close ALL active internet explorer windows, it should fix the issue. If not, it's probably adware.

    Hope this helps!

Why not use pop-up stopper ?
Beside i don't accept that you can't close anything you see that has an X
    Or use alt F4.
By the way some popups are good ones, ask my bank manager .

xp sp2 will prevent the windows from poping up off the screen edge and all windows will have a frame to make it easer to close. also try the beta of antispy at microsoft.com it should help.

Another important tip is teach everyone who may use your computer how to avoid getting spyware. You can be the most vigilant protector against spyware, but if your brother/wife/friend just clicks yes to everything that appears on the screen so they can get 1000 free emoticons for their email, you're done!
