My dads computer started running really slow and I looked at it to see what could be causing it. He said it had started today(thursday) and that he haddent dont anything big with it sence sunday in which he ran spy bot search and destroy. I didnt think this would cause it, but ill let you know sence that was the biggest thing. I dont know if it could be windows related or software related so i was wondering if any of you might have any ideas on what it is or what i can do to figure it out

Could be ad/spy ware. Good be just the hard drive is starting to fill up. Could be in serious need of a defrag. Could be a virus. Could be many things.

Gonna needd some more info, and i would go through the basics (like Kryyst said). Delete all temp, internet, cookies, and recycle bin files, then Defrag. Check out what programs are runing in the backround and at startup. Run ad-aware, run reg cleaner, check for viruses....etc. etc.

I already did that, checked the ram its fine. spybot search and destroy deletes adware and i noted in my first post that I did that. hardly any space is being taken up and no virus. on an 80gig hd 68gigs is free. Just the ussual programs at start up. Those where all things that I already tried.

    OMG!!1 F0RMAT!1!

no but seriously, i have everything on my computer set up so that my OS partition is on a whole separate partition so that if my OS bitches at me for one second, i format it like its goin out of style. so i would say to format, but that might not be an option. the best defense is preventative though. run ad-aware and use opera (or firefox if you are so inclined) because all of the data miner and xupiter-esque exploits that make your system run slower are all geared towards IE, so a different browser will certainly help.

so yeah, thats my suggest, format :D

The amount of Hard drive space left over doesn't matter if the info that you do have is wacked. Sorry if I was redundant.
As I said, more info is needed. Kinda doubting it is hardware.
What OS, how long has it been running, if its XP can you go back to a restore point.

yeah its xp and i went back, im just going to reformat because the comp had problems with the cpu fan not spinning full speed so it was overheating and shutting down. I was mnore worried it was cpu damage from it over heating but a reformat will rule everything out or narrow it to hardware. I dod a bench on the cpu and its speed where normal so it might just be serious need of a defrag.
