serious problem new config

edited March 2004 in Hardware
Hi there... im workin on building a new pc. thought it wouldnt be too hard. ha. well... maybe im just not getting it, but my mobo is failing to recognize my floppy, and i need to be able to acess the floppy so that i can get to command prompt. see, i have to format my c partition so that i can do a clean install of win xp. however i can not completely reformat my entire hard drive. the rest of my data is on there. Ive contacted the online vendor (newegg.com), and they dont do technical support. I assume they are just in the business of retail i guess. im not complaining. i got a great deal and the company is supposed to be reputable. Another problem im having is that my old pc wont even boot into the old os anymore. thats why i need to format c because its configured for my old pc and my new pc cant run xp unless i re-install it right? well.. it resets when it gets past the boot up so assume that is the case. heres my config

k7 triton series ga 7n400-L
amd xp 3000+ cpu
400 mhz fsb
512 corsair ddr ram
seagate barracuda 80 gig hdd

every is brand new except for the hard drive, but the hard drive is fairly new, no more then a 1-2 months old. I have tried different cables, and different floppy drives, but no success.. actually the k7 tries to boot from my cd rom... i didnt get that. i guess it doesnt even realize that the floppy is there so goes to the next boot device? any response to this is appreciated... i need to get my data and finish a project for a client and thinking im SOL..... up the creek?

Is your floppy light LED constantly on? If it is, your cable is upside-down. If everything is plugged in properly (including power cable), the POST screen will detect the floppy and normally you should be good to go.

You don't necessarily have to - You could install XP into a different directory. However just to let you know, if your computer is manually set in the CMOS to boot from the CD first (the preffered method instead of floppy drives these days), you can boot up to XP set up without even needing to use the floppy method mentioned earlier. XP setup includes utils for formatting drives.

You're correct; you can't get past XP's boot-up because of the drastic hardware change.

Hope this helps and welcome to the forums ;)

Dude, you shouldn't have to reformat at all. The worst that should happen is that you have to re-activate Windows XP online due to "a serious change in your system configuration". If you can't boot into XP you have some hardware problem. Unfortunately I don't know WTF that is, so I can't help. If I was sitting in front of your computer I could fix it though, I'm just crazy like that.

Have you tried using the good old F8 Key to boot into safe mode? Really, there is no reason to have to reformat just to install all of your old hardware onto a new mobo, even if your memory, vid card, cpu are all new also. Never once have a had the OS completely crash due to putting an old hard drive into a new system even if windows was installed previously. I'm talking back to the K6-2 days even.

thanks for the replies.. unfortunately i still cant get it going vercello, however im going to just go ahead and get it replaced under warranty, so i guess all is well. or will be well.. whenever i get it back. and yes adham, i did try safe mode. this has worked before, (movin an os installed on another system) but the pc i moved my hdd to already had xp on it so i imagine thats why it still recognized the os. keep in mind this is a completely new system... i dont see how it could work if the system was never configured for xp. but thats just my few pennies. im no computer genius. im just making a semi educated guess. I wish u were in front of my pc because im going to prolly have to wait for a while to get my new mobo back, plus im not even sure if im going to be re-embersed for the shipping and handling.
