Windows Intermittently Freezes During Startup

edited March 2004 in Science & Tech
Hello,

I am running Windows 98. When it is loading the desktop, the hard drive just stops responding for a couple of seconds, along with the mouse. It's like it freezes on and off for about 30 seconds. This has been happening for as long as I can remember. It is very annoying, because startup time is like 3 minutes long! When I run MSCONFIG, and disable all of my startup programs, it still happens, so I know that it is not being caused by a curropt program or something. PLEASE HELP!

i hate to harp on you, but for the love of all that is sacred, why the hell are you still running windows 98 in 2004?

Appears it's having issues either with a dying/defective piece of hardware or there's a driver loading/unloadnig a few times before windows either gives up or the device finally initializes... could also be a slow-to-respond LAN... my best guesses... also could be a usb device not responding in time or a usb hub hanging.

If you have a cable modem connection, disconnect this and see if the issue still occurs, this will eliminate the LAN connection causing the slowdown.
