mix pc2700 and pc3200

edited April 2004 in Hardware
just wondering if you can mix pc2700 (512MB) and pc3200 (1GB) without too much consequence. i realize that the pc3200 will probably only be as fast as the 2700 (only as fast as the slowest part in the system), but I am curious as to whether or not it can be done.

I plan on a slow upgrade. I want to get two pc3200's (1GB) but I can't afford both at the same time. lol. and right now i have one pc2700 (512MB) on an abit-an7 mobo. the mobo supports both of these types of memory.

thnx for ur help :-)

So long as you run the bus at speeds and timings the PC2700 can handle you'll be fine.

The ram will run at it's slower speed. If you have a stick of 3200 and another stick of 2700, the 3200 stick will run @ 2700 speeds.

This rule applies to all mixed speed ram.

    thnx for the info. :-)

btw, for those of you that were trying to help me figure out why my video card kept getting fried in my computer (I went through 4 of them...jeesh!). Anyways, I never did figure out what was causing the problem, however, I have replaced EVERY part in my computer now (including the monitor) so if it screws up this time I am giving up and throwing that shi* out the window. My job recently gave me a sweet laptop with 1GB RAM, 1.7GHz, and 128MB vid card to use and keep so I won't be so screwed over if my desktop bites the dust again. haha. but for those of you that helped me through the process....THNX! :-)
