Please help me,

I have got Windows Xp home upgrade edition and i am trying to install it . I have installed it once on this computer but then i took it off and installed linux. That didnt work so now i want to install Xp again.

So i deleted all the partions and made a new one with all the memory on it and formatted it. After this I go through the setup until it reboots. It says it will continue with setup after this, but it never does. It just boots back up to CD again and repeats the whole process. :S

Ive tried reseting the CMOS and also trying different partition sizes. I dont know what to do nothing works and it just wont start up into the setup part. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

When it gets to to that reboot phase has it gone through all of the proccess of copying things to your harddrive and all of the driver identification phase and the reboot is the next step. Or is it actually just going along and then crashing and rebooting?

If it's rebooting at it's normal 'reboot' screen that it doesn as part of the typical install. It sounds just like it's booting to the CD because it's in your drive. Now normally there will be a prompt that says something like "Press any key to boot from CD" if you hit a key it'll boot from cd and you'll be back in your loop. Not pressing a key should cause it to boot from the hard drive.

So if you aren't hitting a key at that prompt and it's still booting from the CD eject the cd as when at the 'reboot' part and it should go to the hard drive.

Now if it doesn't work there is a good chance that your MBR is screwed up still from your linux install and it's trying to load a linux partition that doesn't work. XP would read it as a bad drive and look for another boot device, in this case the CD and boot to it.

So if that's the case. You'll need to put in a windows 98 boot disk and get to a dos prompt and do an fdisk /mbr which will clear the masterboot record and should fix the problem.

If that doesnt work try taking out all the memory but one stick. Its pretty basic but it worked for me.

get a win98 floppy boot disk. Boot up with the floppy in the drive so that it boots to your a: Drive

Then at the a: prompt put in 'fdisk /mbr' (withouth the ''s)

That'll clear the Master Boot Record. Also from there you may want to just do fdisk also and make sure that you don't have any other partitions since your system is wiped anyway just delete the partitions and start over. Though don't make any at this point. So when you are done you should have no MBR and no partitions at all.

Then reboot with the XP cd in the drive and create your NTFS partition and it should install fine.

I think the best way to resolve the issue would be to zero fill the hard drive then install Xp. Just downlload one from your hard drive maker then you should be able to install windows ok, Gary
