heres the thing i got some sort of virus and then got rid of it. but it left me with a load of damaged software for my hardware and i can use the reload cd. so if anyone knows how to restore a windows xp home to factory settings without using the reload cd it would be a great help

thanks

Just to add, using the 'restore' feature after a virus attack generally isn't reccomended. Virses could be backed up in those situations.

Anyways, restoring XP to a 'default' state may prove troublesome. In Windows 2000 you could easily just swap the registry with the default-state backup reg and your PC would be good as new, but in XP I've always had troubles... and *especially* in XP Home *shudders*.

depending on what got damaged re-install the drivers for your hardware. Then pop the XP cd in and do a re-pair install. If however you have a laptop or some other 'out of the box' system that didn't come with an actual XP cd and instead just has those lets return your system to day 1 disks that won't work. You'll need to get your hands on an XP cd for your version.

On a personal note. I really hate the fact now that you buy a system from dell/hp/etc.. and they say it comes with XP...What they really mean is it comes with a bundled version of XP that doesn't actually work on it's own.

I've installed Dell's bundled XP on another computer.
