Well guys and galls think i did it....

I neglected my pc for too long and was working on a paper and the thing just shut down....I mean poof....all power gone.

Makes me think that it is the power supply but not sure. When i turn on the pc the power supply fan and the cpu fan try to turn but nothing. Let me tell you this though, by neglect i mean, you wouldnt believe what this dust bucket looks like. I pulled out from under the desk and bout sufficated in dust. The Power fan is caked, the interior is caked, there is even dust hangin from the wires. Now my pc is not that knew, my specs are for real. So i am figuring that an upgrade is not that far away. The thing is I am a new dady and it is finals week so right now just isnt a good time for my main pc to go down. Luckly my wife has this laptop and most of my school work is on it too.

So anyway, Where to now? Is it the Power suppl? How do i check? If so that is all i want to replace right now!

What do yah think and where do i go from here.

TIA

Bud

Sounds like the psu, you can pick one up for 30 bucks or so, just to get you through until you want to upgrade. I have turned off a PC and then the next day I got nothin but jiggles from the fans. (jiggle jiggle.... dead)

CONGRADULATIONS on being a new Daddy!!!!!! :jelly:

Sounds like your budget needs to make your decision for you, get all you can for what you can afford. However, try to go for better quality and less wattage, cuz a high powered PSU that is a POS, is not a good way to go. ;)

well if i just do a PSU then there is no real budget. What should i use? How much wattage?

This is what i was looking at but dont know who or what is good!

also was going to chip the 2 bucks for dual fans if worth it?

Well, by budget I mean can you spend $75 on it, or do you need to spend more like $20.

the PSU you pointed out sounds like more power, less quality. Not what I would recommend. Dood I have been running a nice 330W PSU and have not had any problems, and I have all the same things in it that you do.

How old was your PSU? the dust in your PC was most likely the problem not lack of Wattage.

As far as recommendations, a "name brand" should be safe Antec, entermax, Fortran source, etc..

CAN SOMEONE ON THESE FORUMS, POINT US TO SOME DIFFERENT THREADS. about this subject, cuz I'm drawing a blank. Pretty PLEASE!!!!

what im saying....always was taught to read before ask..but kept drawing a blank....

    Anyway, back to the PSU

    75 bucks...wow...on a PSU....rather just up my MB...lol...for that kind of money.

So i guess your answer is no....not looking to spend that type of money on a PSU...

The dust i figure is the prob cuz i replace the power supply like 3 yrs ago

One reason why i am looking at adding some extra case fans to stop the build up (would that work?)

So are u saying to not waste the money on a higher wattage if going cheap...or to go cheap i need a higher wattage?

Thx for the help by the way Z

You need a good brand name PSU. Usually brand names equate to spending more money for less wattage. Enermax is a good example IMO. I bought a 350 watter for like $75 2 years ago and it's running my current rig. I luv it.

A decent PSU will deliver a steady voltage required for your components, which is much better than a 500 watt generic PSU which could prolly blow up in a week or fry your parts. Generally they'll last longer too.

Having more fans won't help stop a build-up btw. You really need some sorta filter. You can buy filter pads and if possible mount them on your fans intakes.

You might be stretching a 300 watt with 2 hard drives and 2 cd-roms.

    k....been doing some more research....

FSP300...I looked at Toms and there is a PSU comparison and this turned out to be the best overall...now looking at the model...FSP300 i am assumming that FSP stands for fortron source....if this is the case how come when i put that model in i get a ton of others ...like sparkle, Aopen, and other generics

    Whats the deal?

    What watts do you suggest?
